Pages 37 to 72 of the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole have been slightly more exciting than the first 36 pages but it still does not seem like a rather thrilling or entertaining book. The book has not had any suspense so far but I think it has had a little mystery. I think that some things in the book have been too obvious and easy to guess such as the divorce of Adrian’s mom and dad. A thing like that could easily be covered up better and give the book a little sense of mystery and suspense.
I think that in the book so far there are three plots, Adrian’s school life, Adrian caring for Bert Baxter and his life with his parents at home. So far the main and best described plot is his school life and his friends. I think that there is no link to his school life and home life but I think there is between school and with Bert Baxter.
As in the last section in this book, Adrian is slowly becoming frustrated with his complicated life. The only things that were good for Adrian in the section was his birthday and Nigel and Pandora broke up. After reading this section it seems that the book is slowly but surely becoming more interesting to read as the plot goes on.
In this newest section of “The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole”, we see many new developments. Some were so blatantly obvious that we wonder how Adrian missed them. Other events take us so by surprise that they don’t seem to relate to the story. Whether the new turns in events are one extreme, the other, or anything in between, the story has now become a lot more interesting. I will now be doing a study of the characters in the section “37-72”.
The characters of this novel are drawn from many likely sources. Some may be drawn from multiple sources. Adrian probably came from a combination of many different british school children to form this protagonist. Bert probably came from a war hero the author may know, and Pandora most likely came from the Myth of Pandora’s box, hence her chosen nickname “Box”. The author seems to want to portray everyone in a simplistic yet complicated view. Even having read this far, I am still not sure exactly of Adrian’s personality. But I know that he has progressed a lot in these 72 pages. The Author likes to twist Adrian’s view of people, turning it almost completely around. This happens multiple times. Many of the characters, by this point in the book, have become 3D. Others, such as Nigel, are still rather flat. We are learning many new things about the characters, some of which we may not have wanted to know! Although some of the characters remain flat, I feel that the characters as a whole are progressing. They are coming together to form a book that we want to read. Unlike most books, Character delineation in “The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole” is extremely indirect. The plot jumps all over the place, with seemingly random events happening for no apparent reason. The Characters evolved almost by themselves. Adrian doesn’t mature merely because of the events that happen, but because he is aging. This is Rafi, signing off.
I agree with you rafi,it is true that most of the developments are too obvious and it is unbelievable that Adrian does not see them coming. You are also right about Adrian's personality, although he is a main character, I dont think we know him well enough. However, I do not agree that Nigel is flat, we know enough about him to know how people feel about him and what his role in the story is. Aside from that, well done.
I disagree with you on the fact that the book isn't exciting. We can see obvious tension rising between Adrian and Nigel, and even though Adrian isn't mad at Nigel due to his breakup with Pandora, he is, at the very least, at breaking point. I can't wait to see what will happen when the tension finally overflows. -Rafi
I think that the author does not introduce the characters as well as is needed to properly understand the plot. We don't know much abot pandora. This means that we don't know what to think of her. The plot is progressing in having an actual story as the book moves on. I still believe that Adrian is not controlling the plot, however, the other characters are.
The author definatly tried to forshadow Adrian's parents divorce. I could tell that some thing was happening between his mother and Mr. Lucas. I think this is a good thing because it gives the story an aspect of suspence. In my opinion, I believe that the stories of the other characters are more interesting than Adrian's is. I think it would be interesting to hear about pandora and her story. Adrian's story is almost repetitive. The plot still has no mystery in it, but it is getting more interesting.
I dissagree with Dylan. I believe that there is some mystery but no suspense. I think that there mystery in the sense that there is allot more about the characters that I want to know. The plot would progress more with more information about the characters. I also think that Adrian's thoughts are not portrayed in enough detail. It would be better to hear what he was thinking, but I guess that is just the way the author chose to wright the book.
I agree with everyone that pages 37-72 were more exiting that the first 36 pages, and I agree with Dylan that mystery has crept up on our story. I also disagree with Rafi that Nigel is flat. we have gotten to know him as a person and we have learned about his family and personality. I also agree with Johnny that it would be nice to know a little more about Pandora.
The Characters have developed a lot in this story, we have gotten to know them better and been able to visualize and sympathize with them. most of the characters so far are 3-dimensional, but there are still a few flat ones. the author seems to have some greater idea for a plot that i have no doubt will be revealed later. I also wonder if the feud between Adrian's parents will cease and if Adrian will decide to live with his mother and "creep Lucas" or with his father.
Personally, I have been enjoying this book very much and wish to continue doing so. all the best, Kas.
